Understanding the Spatial Relationship between Air Pollution and Social Deprivation in the Uk
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the UK, only a limited amount of research has been undertaken into the burden of air pollution on different social groups, most of which has occurred during the last five years. This paper focuses on a study undertaken by Netcen on behalf of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), to assess the spatial relationship between air pollution and social deprivation in selected urban areas of the UK. This study used simple correlation analysis, comparing average ward (NUTS 5) NO2 and PM10 concentrations with levels of deprivation. Positive correlations between social deprivation and air pollutant concentrations were observed in selected urban areas except Cardiff, with higher concentrations being associated with higher levels of deprivation. This paper briefly outlines other research in the UK that has followed this study, and highlights current research being undertaken by Netcen on behalf of DEFRA.

Chronic air pollution and social deprivation as modifiers of the association between high temperature and daily mortality
BACKGROUND Heat and air pollution are both associated with increases in mortality. However, the interactive effect of temperature and air pollution on mortality remains unsettled. Similarly, the relationship between air pollution, air temperature, and social deprivation has never been explored. METHODS We used daily mortality data from 2004 to 2009, daily mean temperature variables and relati...
متن کاملAn initial assessment of spatial relationships between respiratory cases, soil metal content, air quality and deprivation indicators in Glasgow, Scotland, UK: relevance to the environmental justice agenda
There is growing interest in links between poor health and socio-environmental inequalities (e.g. inferior housing, crime and industrial emissions) under the environmental justice agenda. The current project assessed associations between soil metal content, air pollution (NO2/PM10) and deprivation and health (respiratory case incidence) across Glasgow. This is the first time that both chemical ...
متن کاملReconsidering the Relationship between Air Pollution and Deprivation.
This paper critically examines the relationship between air pollution and deprivation. We argue that focusing on a particular economic or social model of urban development might lead one to erroneously expect all cities to converge towards a particular universal norm. A naive market sorting model, for example, would predict that poor households will eventually be sorted into high pollution area...
متن کاملModelling collinear and spatially correlated data.
In this work we present a statistical approach to distinguish and interpret the complex relationship between several predictors and a response variable at the small area level, in the presence of (i) high correlation between the predictors and (ii) spatial correlation for the response. Covariates which are highly correlated create collinearity problems when used in a standard multiple regressio...
متن کاملUsing remote sensing data and GIS to evaluate air pollution and their relationship with land cover and land use in Baghdad City
The research used the satellite image (Landsat 7 ETM ) within the thermal infrared sixth band (TIR6) and geographic information system (GIS) to determine the air pollution and its relationship with the land cover (LC) and land use (LU) of Baghdad city. Concentration of total suspended particles (TSP), lead (Pb), carbon oxides (CO, CO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were obtained from 22 ground mea...
